How to Use the Weighted Grade Calculator
Using this calculator is simple. First, Add Items for each component of your grade, such as one for assignments, one for the mid-term, and one for the final exam. Next, Enter Marks by inputting the percentage score you received for that item in the ‘Mark (%)’ field; for example, if you scored 45 out of 50, you would enter 90. Then, Enter Weights by specifying how much that item is worth towards your final grade in the ‘Weight (%)’ field. Finally, Calculate your grade by clicking the ‘Calculate Weighted Grade’ button to see your final score.
Why Is Calculating a Weighted Average Important?
Most college and university courses are not graded equally, as different components contribute different amounts to your final grade. For example, a Final Exam might be worth 50% of your total grade, a Mid-Term Exam could be worth 25%, while all Assignments & Quizzes might make up the remaining 25%. A simple average would be inaccurate because it treats all marks equally. A weighted average gives the correct importance (or “weight”) to each component, providing a true picture of your final standing. This calculator saves you the complex manual math and gives you instant, accurate results.
Understanding the Formula
The calculator finds the weighted average by multiplying each mark by its weight, summing these results, and then dividing by the sum of all the weights. The formula is:
Weighted Average = (Mark₁ × Weight₁) + (Mark₂ × Weight₂) + … / (Weight₁ + Weight₂ + …)
For best results, the total of all your “Weight (%)” fields should add up to 100.
